We are delighted to announce that our S3Food proposal “DNA digitization: olive oil authenticity and traceability from field to bottle” received funding.
Alongside with our project partner, InTTrust, starting from June 1st, we will join our forces to create a system beyond the typical blockchain by utilizing state-of-the-art PCR, ML and AI technologies, dedicated to the EVOO supply chain!
Building the first “DNAblockchain” system dedicated to the Olive Oil industry

The project entitled DNAblockchain aims to deliver a blockchain system that incorporates DNA data, in order to ensure traceability of an olive oil from field to bottle. DNA data offer complete transparency, safeguarding integrity and quality of an EVOO, supporting sustainable production and minimizing fraud risks.
In DNAblockchain we couple DNA data, ML/AI post-processing pipelines to a blockchain system dedicated to the olive oil industry.
Six-month progress – brief report
i) in silico discovery of novel biomarkers, ii) experimental protocols optimization, iii) ML/AI pipeline training using DNA signals, iv) high-level design of supply chain features based on IBM’s blockchain platform.
Final report – brief summary
i) Successful production of DNA data to empower authentication and traceability of an Olive oil (connecting the content of a bottle to what is reported on the label), ii) validation of novel genetic markers, iii) design of a ML/AI post-processing pipeline to accelerate olive varietal classification, iv) determination of origin from leaf samples of the same variety but from two distinct regions of Crete (Chania and Rethymon) using DNA data.
